The imagery in Haikyuu!! is something really powerful. It has been that way from the beginning. There’s always something to be said about certain shots or camera angles at times. And not surprisingly, considering each of their individual and joint character development, throughout the entire anime there were many shots that had Kageyama and Hinata standing in the same frame, often to highlight an upcoming freak quick shot that would give Karasuno a point, or an important conversation etc.
My point is, you often see Kageyama and Hinata standing next to each other with no one else and/or nothing else in between them in these seemingly unimportant shots, even though they’re not speaking to each other in these frames, in order to stress just how important they are both to each other and to the team as a whole (and on a meta level, obviously because of the plot as well). You could substitute these frames for any other person/duo and it wouldn’t really have mattered because during these shots they’re not really the focus. Usually someone else is speaking or something else is happening in the background/foreground, or the focus is their relationship with someone else (shot #7 for example was used to highlight Kageyama and Oikawa’s past, but you can still see Hinata’s hair from behind Kageyama’s shoulder), so technically, these shots are unnecessary.
But they aren’t unnecessary because Production I.G really wants to emphasize this. If you go back and rewatch the episodes now, you’ll notice these shots.
And yet, in particular during episode 24, I felt as though they had too many of these shots during one single episode. At first I thought it was weird but after finishing it, I felt as though throughout the entire episode, they really just wanted to build up to the moment they would break apart. You have all these shots in which they’re together, more than in any other episode (helping each other, shoulder by shoulder, planning an attack) and then you have the moment where they snap.
Not coincidentally, the shot we have right after their fight is
Kageyama and Hinata in the same shot, but with Takeda-sensei standing between them, not as a barrier but as a visual sign that they’ve broken apart, that something is different.
The interesting thing is, although we don’t see the end of the fight on screen, when it jumps to the scenes post ED
After Ukai-san explains he’ll pay for the food, we see Kageyama and Hinata and there’s Daichi visually separating them as well, but right afterwards
they look at each other as though the “barrier” does not exist.
By the time we get to the restaurant scene, Production I.G is back at Kageyama and Hinata standing next to each, not speaking to each other because the focus is on something else that is happening at the time, and with no barriers in between them
Not to mention, the way Kageyama glances at Hinata when he finally begins eating, before he starts eating himself.
For many different reasons episode 24 was really heart breaking, but to me, the fact that this mess of a redhead isn’t seen constantly smiling and making dumb jokes all the time as he is in previous episodes is what totally kills me inside.
This is really important
